A component of the MPOWIR program is the Pattullo Conference, held May 18‐21, 2008, which was named for June Pattullo,
the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in physical oceanography.
The goals of the conference were:
• To bring junior women tand senior scientists together to share experiences, advice and
concerns.
• To build community networks with peers and senior scientists.
• To build confidence and skills for promoting science.
• To raise awareness of issues confronting junior women among the senior scientist community.
Twenty four junior scientists from across the country attended, a 50% increase
from the number originally anticipated. Fifteen senior scientists also attended.
The agenda included:
• Research talks
• Professional development sessions
• Small group activities
• A final presentation from the junior scientists to the senior participants
Initial feedback suggests that the Pattullo Conference was a valuable experience for everyone involved. In a follow up survey, all respondents said that they would “definitely recommend this conference to another junior scientist.”
To support the
junior scientists future plans include:
• Surveying all participants about their Pattullo experience
• Establishing a listserv to facilitate communication between participants
• Encouraging cooperative projects, such as creating a
powerpoint presentation about the conference and writing an article for EOS
• Submitting an article to Nature Jobs about community mentoring and the success of the Pattullo
Conference
• Drafting a full workshop report, which will be a “how to” guide for other groups interested in
hosting a community mentoring workshop
• Creating mentoring groups that will meet periodically via conference call
• Working on the MPOWIR website to create a more interactive and lively forum for continued
discussion
